A 29-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by a car while crossing the road in Darwin, according to police.
The woman was crossing the highway on a bicycle at about 4:30pm (AEDT) on Thursday when the driver of the car was driving at 80 kilometres per hour (62mph) when she struck the back of the bike, which was travelling at a speed of up to 60km/h (37mph).
“She was hit and died on the scene,” Sgt. Dave Thomas, from the Darwin Police Department, said.
The driver, a 47-year old man from Darwin, was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Police say the collision is under investigation.
The incident occurred just before midnight on Thursday, the same night as the Darwin Zoo’s opening ceremony.
The man is not facing charges and is expected to appear in court. ABC/wires
